Obscure Magazine

Obscure Magazine was a collaborative class final project during my senior year and was published by the Fall 2018, MEJO 683 class at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I was chosen by the professor to be the Art Director of this project. Responsibilities included leading the class in the conception, workshops, development, timeline, design, and acting as liaison to the print house to produce the final printed magazine. Everyone got to keep a few magazines at the end of the semester. It was neat.

Below are a few choice pages and spreads I made for the magazine. If you want to see more, you can flip through the full Obscure Magazine on Issuu.

Behind the scenes of making the Obscure cover

I constructed the haunted house out of card stock paper. After freehand drawing the elements, I used and X-acto knife to cut out the pieces.

I taped it together and used a black bed sheet as a backdrop for a photo shoot. Excuse the mess, the image below was captured at roughly 4:30 am. From there I took the digital images into Photoshop.

RIP this little guy who nearly escaped the haunted house (he didn’t make the final cut). This was used as the back cover of the magazine.
